iHome’s New iPod Bookshelf System
December 2006
From Product Reviews
There seems to be two camps one can join when it comes to iPod-inspired speaker systems: the classic bookshelf model, which usually comes with two front speakers, a docking/control station and a sub; and the all-in-one, integrated iPod speaker unit. The iHome iH52 represents the most earnest member of the former camp, a high-fidelity, powerful, multi-functional speaker system that could finally supplant any traditional CD bookshelf set-up. Making the iH52 more attractive is its form, a sleek iPod white or black, with components that not just fit anywhere, but could actually disappear. For additional convenience, the front and right speakers can be configured to lay

Style Gets Cheaper and Cheaper Dark and boxy is a thing of the past it seems as more and more audio companies build affordable mini-systems that don't cut corners in the good-looks department. Aiwa is one of them. Its new XR-X7 has a silvery, chiseled chassis that appeals to that modern look (no, not "mod"). It's a stereo CD player with 16 watts-per-channel of power along with an AM/FM tuner and auxiliary audio inputs for attaching other audio devices, say an MP3 player (using a mini-jack to RCA adapter) or a tape deck. The price from the company is $300. www.aiwa.com Samsung's Palm/Phone (includes

Wharfedale Diamond 8 Speakers
July 2001
From Product Reviews
Clearly a Super Value by Mike McGann For decades, we former colonists have managed to revere speakers from the old mother country, seeing them as models of precision and workmanship.Serious audiophiles at minimum acknowledge this, and in some cases, slobber embarrassingly all over themselves at the thought of British woofers. Not without reason, mind you, as I have exhibited my share of lust for the likes of B&W,
Monitor Audio, Mission and so on over the years. Wharfedale, which points out quite proudly its status as the top selling speaker line in the U.K., seems quite determined to get the attention of we Yanks.

JVC Swings for the Fences—and ConnectsBy Mike McGannIt's been more than two years since I sat in a hotel suite in Osaka, Japan, and heard DVD-Audio for the first time. While the demo, put on by Panasonic parent Matsushita, was impressive, those of us in the room had a sense that it was a bit cooked. A quick look at a colleague's sound pressure meter confirmed that the DVD-Audio samples had been played at about 3 dB louder, which can make it seem better in a quick demo. As usual, I decided to reserve judgement on DVD-Audio until I got my hands on a

Imagine the Civilization of London With Los Angeles Weather By Mike McGann When we think of the English, a few stereotypes pop immediately into our heads as Americans: awful food, cold and rainy weather, a stiff reserve, great music and literature, and those palace guards with the funny hats. Anyone who's been to the UK knows only some of that stuff is accurate. American audiophiles think of English speakers as stiff, a bit bright, accurate, but lacking warmth. (And, yes, I know there some British audiophiles who have suggested that "American audiophile" is an oxymoron, but they all write for T3.) Anyone who has

Two Really Can Be Better Than One By Mike McGann We live in wonderful times. Everywhere you turn, there are wonderful high-end audio/video receivers, boasting serious amounts of power, wonderful sound and cool features like Surround EX, all at very reasonable prices between $3,000 and $4,000. Like a swarm of ants shaking things up at an idyllic picnic, Parasound decided to disrupt your simple choice of which big-buck receiver to buy with a pair of separate components priced at just less than $2,200, designed to blow you into the
