Last Minute Santa
Last Minute Santa
December 17, 2007 From Steve Smith
If you are like me, you not only wait until the last minute to do your holiday shopping but you tend to overspend at the last minute. Maybe it is the guilt over having waited so long, or a kind of final rush of holiday spirit, but I always opt for the pricier gifts the closer it gets to the big shopping deadline. For those of you like me, here are a few bigger surprises that will give that “Oh, my gosh” moment from a loved one this holiday.Microsoft Wireless Entertainment Desktop 8000 ($299)$300 for a keyboard combo? What kinds of TVs are HDTVs? n All new TVs are now DTVs as per the FCC mandate that all new TVs with tuners must have a DTV tuner. High-definition TVs (widescreen DTVs with resolution of 720p and up) can be standard direct-view, LCD, plasma, rear- projection units or front projectors that require separate screens. HDTV refers to resolution— the horizontal lines that can be displayed on the screen—not the technology upon which the TV is based. Is my current TV obsolete? n No. The FCC has mandated that all TV broadcasts be converted to digital by February 17, 2009. Even so, when all broadcasts are digital, there

CEDIA Episode II: Attack of the iPhones
September 7, 2007 From Greg Robinson
I find it telling that the hottest gadget I see everywhere at CEDIA Expo is one that’s not even on formal display. You have to hand it to Apple. Their (newly less expensive) iPhone is definitely the must-have gadget of the year for many folks out there. Our own Audrey Gray has one and she let me play so I could see what all the fuss is about. There’s no denying its cool factor, that’s for sure. I guess I just didn’t expect to see one everywhere I went at the Expo. I’ll just have to keep my boring Verizon LG phone

Vista: The Six Month Report Card
September 4, 2007 From Steve Smith
About nine months ago, I had the eerie experience of having Microsoft representatives show up at my house in a limo to deliver Vista. I happened to be writing the cover story on the then-upcoming OS for a major computer magazine, and apparently the company felt there was enough riding on this review to send a product manager, a PR person (who typed everything we said) and a loaded, massive HP laptop with Vista to my front door. This was a Men in Black sort of moment. I expected to see black ops helicopters whirling above my townhouse and Ninjas repelling down ropes.

DIY: Build a DVR PC
DIY: Build a DVR PC
May 2007 From E-Gear
By now, most people have been exposed to life with a Digital Video Recorder (DVR). Whether it’s an official TiVo brand box or a TiVo knockoff from your local cable company, most folks realize the benefits of being able to pause live television, rewind a touchdown that you missed or schedule regular recordings of your favorite shows. In short, there’s no going back to life without a DVR. As wonderful as they are, you probably know by now that not all DVRs are created equally. Are you at times frustrated with your DVR’s quirky behavior? Do you wish you had more storage

HAVA Wireless HD Day
HAVA Wireless HD Day
December 2006 From Hot Products
Like Slingbox before it, Monsoon’s HAVA Wireless HD allows you to watch your TV content just about anywhere. Unlike Slingbox, HAVA adds the word “wireless” to the equation. Where Slingbox requires some sort of wired ethernet connection, HAVA connects wirelessly, being detected, in the case of homes with a Windows XP Media Center Edition PC, as a wireless TV tuner. HAVA streams video content from cable, satellite, DVD, TiVo, camcorder or any other video source in MPEG-2 at 8Mbps in 720 x 480 to multiple PCs in one wireless network or remotely in MPEG-4 to any PC connected to the internet.

Cresting the Z-Wave of the Future
October 20, 2006 From Grant Clauser
I was invited to a posh apartment in New York’s upper East Side this week to get a hands-on experience with Z-Wave, a home control protocol. Z-Wave is a radio frequency technology for wirelessly turning on and off appliances like lights and drapes. It creates a mesh network in which a device communicates to the others letting them know it’s status to ensure there are no overlapping signals and mistakes. Since it’s wireless, Z-Wave doesn’t require extensive installation, so it’s good for retrofits and apartments. There are small plug-in modules allowing you to control lamps or wall modules for installed lighting. There are also
