Street Smart Navigation
September 2007
From E-Gear
Today’s navigation systems not only tell you how to get where to go, but what the traffic will be like along the way, where to find the cheapest gas, what’s playing at the movies and more. When the first CD-ROM-based in-car navigation system became available about a decade ago, the electronic pathfinders were like a dashboard miracle. Just punch in a destination and in a minute or so a screen would show you the way, with voice prompts to make sure you didn’t miss a turn. If you did make a wrong turn, the system would reroute you, and even find ATMs, gas stations,
Parrot 3200 LS-COLOR Bluetooth Hands-Free Car Kit
August 2007
From Product Reviews
People are always asking why Bluetooth connectivity and iPod integration aren’t in every vehicle in 2007. The reason is the extreme lead time the OEM auto manufacturers have to adhere to. For something to show up in a car in 2007, a committee in an automaker probably discussed it back in 2004. Although it is true that lead times are getting shorter because of CAD technology and other cool manufacturing processes, sometimes a small electronic gadget in a car can get snagged because it hasn’t gotten crash-tested with the rest of the vehicle. As John Stossel would say on 20/20 “Give me a
Car Audio on a Beer Budget
May 2007
From College Gear Guide
So, you are loading the last load of Yaffa Blocks and computer peripherals into your ride to return to school. The thing you really need? Killer tunes for your trip. It even makes more sense for commuter students. Unfortunately, car audio can be a low priority with leisure funds

Review: Alpine Blackbird Portable Navigation System
October 2006
From Product Reviews
The Alpine Blackbird is a Lilliputian little nav system. A large well-made controller on the right is flanked by a 3.6” LCD screen on the left with 16.7 million possible colors. The controller allows you to zoom in and out on the map, and also flip-flop between navigation and music functions. The little screen is a touchscreen, and Alpine has taken into consideration that sometimes clumsy fingers will be operating the unit. Therefore, when the touchscreen prompts you to press a button, it is a little larger than on other Alpine units making it easy for the end user. It differs from other competitors’
SUPERSYSTEMS
October 2006
From E-Gear
These do-it-all car stereo head units are the top of the 2006 class—with the emphasis on class. Auto manufacturers are coming out with more and more impressive sounding and feature-laden systems these days, and the OEMs have significantly narrowed the performance gap that the car-stereo aftermarket has long enjoyed. But the automakers still can’t match aftermarket suppliers when it comes to early adoption of new technology, features per dollar or just plain good looks and pizzazz. The most obvious example of this is the way in which the leading aftermarket car-stereo companies keep squeezing more and more features into the same-size chassis. After
