Review: Optoma HD80 1080p Projector
Review: Optoma HD80 1080p Projector
August 2007 From Product Reviews
The home theater projector market is probably the most rapidly advancing segment of the HDTV world. While inexpensive flat panel TVs get most of the attention from consumers and most of the floor space at electronics retailers, it’s the projector that really offers the most, and best, picture for the dollar. Emphasizing this trend are some price/performance breakthroughs, most notably the rash of fairly inexpensive projectors that shoot out 1080p resolution. The Optoma HD80 is the latest, and best one I’ve seen. The HD80 is a DLP projector using Texas Instruments’ latest 1080p digital micro mirror device. The use of a single chip (more

“300” Sets Hi-Def Disc Record
HD DVD/Blu-ray Review: 300
August 2007 From DVD Reviews
The high definition discs of the film adaptation of Frank Miller’s graphic novel 300 are nearly as controversial as the film was when it was in theaters. That’s because Warner opted to put it out in both Blu-ray and HD DVD versions- without making both version equal. The situation is kind of like the classical battle of 300 itself—the powerful Blu-ray alliance of Sony, Panasonic, Samsung, LG, Pioneer, Denon, plus all the movie studios (except Universal) vs the smaller, yet better armed and more cunning HD DVD force of Toshiba. The movie itself is visually impressive in both formats. In fact I could

Optoma HD73 Home Theater Projector: A case for 720p
Optoma HD73 Home Theater Projector: A case for 720p
July 2007 From Product Reviews
While we’ve been paying an extra lot of attention to the new crop of home theater projectors sporting 1080p resolution, we don’t want readers to get the impression that anything less is, well, crap. Nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, except for Blu-ray and HD DVD titles, there’s no 1080p content to watch anyway. Projectors with 720p resolution have been getting raves from users and reviewers for several years, and let’s face it, 720p is high definition. Optoma’s new HD73 projector makes a good case for going 720p. It’s essentially an upgrade of the company’s HD72 which last year earned

May 2007 From News
Hometech Middle East expo kicked off Sunday in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, bringing together an international collection of dealers, distributors and vendors for the region’s largest consumer electronics trade show. The event began with some fanfare as His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bib Rashid Al Maktoum cut the opening ribbon and took a personal tour of the convention center. Hometech features about 300 exhibitors, many familiar to US readers (Monster, Hitachi, LG, Samsung, Harman, Optoma) in 80,000 square feet of exhibit space along with two days of keynotes and seminars. The Consumer Electronics Association has partnered with Hometech, which is produced by Messe Frankfurt,

Carada Masquerade Screen
Home Theater Solutions: Projection Screens
March 2007 From E-Gear
Having recently returned from the 2007 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, I can tell you one thing for certain: flat panel displays are everywhere. As I fought my way through the crowds, attending countless press conferences, the big TV makers were all flying the same banner: “Look at our beautiful new flat panel HDTVs!” The highlight was Sharp’s press conference where they unveiled their new 108-inch LCD—the world’s largest flat panel to date. When they raised the curtain, I was certainly impressed. But I also couldn’t help but think, “For that price, shouldn’t the screen be bigger than my house?” Flat

Top 40 Awards
February 2007 From Product Reviews
Every year, the editors of E-Gear magazine selects the top 40 products out of everything we’ve reviewed over the past 12 months. It’s a difficult job because so many products standout each year. As part of our selection process we consider a product’s performance, uniqueness, ingenuity, features and value. We consider this not only a review of the best of our product reviews, but a round-up of some of the best new gadgets and gear of the year. This year we’ve also done something a little different. We’ve added one more award: Product of the Year. We hadn’t set out to do it;
