No More Direct Sales For Gateway

Computer maker Gateway has decided to pull out of direct sales and instead switch to a retail-based model, the company said Friday. “We believe that our retail and e-tail partners offer consumers the best, easiest and most effective way to purchase Gateway products,” Mark Hill, the U.S. General Manager for parent company the Acer Group, said as part of the announcement. “Moving forward, we are pleased to be able to offer Gateway products through thousands of retail storefronts and major online and telephone-based channel partners both in the United States and abroad.” Acer purchased Gateway last year. Review: HomeRemote and iControl Home Control Kits
January 2008 From Product Reviews
I take it for granted that everything I use can be connected with WiFi, so why shouldn’t security devices used in my home do the same? That’s exactly true of both HomeRemote and iControl: both use ZWave technology for easy integration with your home network and are the techno-equivalent of that old lady who keeps an eye out for everything that’s going on from her window. Only now it’s me who will be playing Big Brother. Gateway Set To Be Acquired By Taiwanese Company
August 2007 From News
In a move that creates the world’s third-largest vendor of PCs, the Taiwanese conglomerate Acer, Inc. has reached an agreement to purchase Gateway, Inc., the Wall Street Journal reported Monday. The deal, the Journal reported, values Gateway at $710 million. It has already been approved by both companies’ boards, and is expected to close in December. Gateway also said, Friday, that it plans to exercise right of first refusal to purchase another PC maker, Packard Bell. Lenovo had earlier announced

The Tablet Reconsidered
July 24, 2007 From Steve Smith
More than four years ago Bill Gates introduced the Tablet PC as a “revolution” in computing. The digitizer stylus, combined with strong handwriting recognition, could replace the keyboard in many situations, we were told. Well, years later the keyboard remains alive and unchallenged as the input device of choice, and Tablet PC sales have been generally underwhelming until very recently. Which is no to say that users looking for a new laptop shouldn’t consider the Tablet PC (or “convertible”) option that manufacturers like HP, IBM, Toshiba and Gateway offer in their portable lines. The original “slate” design had no keyboard at all, but

Amoi Net DVD Player
January 2004 From Product Reviews
By Grant Clauser The problem with MP3s and other digital audio files is that they tend to pile up on your PC's hard drive and never get out to the rest of the house. An iPod or similar audio jukebox may be great for taking your music on the road with you, but what about listening to all those tunes when you're lounging on the sofa or puttering around the house. If you're looking to pipe your MP3 collection from your PC to your living room or bedroom, then you need a media server. And if you're looking for a good media server, the
