Hot Product: Yamaha Disklavier
June 2008
From Hot Products
Don’t know how to play the piano - no biggie! The Disklavier isn’t just WiFi linked to Internet radio stations, it turns the music into a live performance with the keys and pedals moving up and down as the vocals come out of the built-in speakers. It’s the 21st Century equivalent of a piano roll, with actual performances being recreated right on the spot. And when you’re tired of that and want some heavy metal (or otherwise), just plug in your iPod to keep the tunes going. www

Review: Yamaha YSP4000 Digital Sound Projector
February 2008
From Product Reviews
The
Yamaha YSP4000 Digital Sound Projector is simplicity personified. For every person that ever said that a 5.1 surround system was too difficult to set up or took up too much space, this product was made for them. Sound bars are nothing new, however, most only contain the front left, center, and right speaker array. For a complete 5.1 sound system you still need to add two rear channel speakers and have an A/V receiver. What makes the YSP4000 unique is all five speakers, amplification, and sound processing is built into the same enclosure. Moreover, it is no larger or significantly heavier than a
Top 40 Awards
February 2007
From Product Reviews
Every year, the editors of E-Gear magazine selects the top 40 products out of everything we’ve reviewed over the past 12 months. It’s a difficult job because so many products standout each year. As part of our selection process we consider a product’s performance, uniqueness, ingenuity, features and value. We consider this not only a review of the best of our product reviews, but a round-up of some of the best new gadgets and gear of the year. This year we’ve also done something a little different. We’ve added one more award: Product of the Year. We hadn’t set out to do it;
Yamaha YHT-670
December 2006
From Product Reviews
In the early days of HTIB, I was generally unimpressed with the quality (or lack thereof) of packages on the market—there was more demand than there was competition, so consumers generally accepted whatever came in the box. Speakers tended to be the worst of the components, followed closely by the receiver and DVD player. Today that noise has changed, as consumers are placing more of a demand on manufacturers and competition for their dollar. One look at the feature-set and host of quality components in the
Yamaha YHT-670 and you’ll soon realize the results of this demand. First up, the YHT-670 is
SimplifyingSURROUND
October 2006
From E-Gear
More people want to hear surround than simply look at it. To get 5.1–channel surround in my TV room, for example, I not only needed the usual three speakers in front but two on the side walls, plus wires from those two to the gear in front. Not that big a problem if the room’s a big, featureless box like the ones you see in speaker setup programs – but in real rooms, those added wires usually cross doorways, which leave you the problem of running them over the doorframe (ugly), laying them on the floor by the doorways (where people may trip) or
My First BIG Purchase
August 2006
From College Gear Guide
For those among the graduating class of 2007, real life lies just around the corner, somewhere between fitting into the cap and gown and crossing over the dais to accept your diploma. A moment of silence, please. For many, a first paycheck (one that doesn’t come from laboring in the food service industry) will mark the occasion that you’ve finally “made it.” At this point, you could follow your parents’ advice: save, save, save! But gosh darnit, you earned this moment. After four (or five, or six...) years of college, you deserve to splurge a little on that mammoth flat screen TV or earsplitting
