Sony Nowhere Close to PSP Phone, Despite Patent

June 2007 By Stephen Silver
Despite numerous reports earlier this week hyping a “PSP Phone” from Sony, the electronics and gaming giant is not about to launch a phone based on the PlayStation Portable (PSP), a spokeswoman for the Sony Ericsson division told Reuters Tuesday.

Sony filed a patent application on May 31 for a “mobile device with video game features,” as Reuters described it, and the company did not rule out eventually combining aspects of its phone and gaming technology. But no such product is on the verge of being announced, the spokeswoman, Merran Wrigley, was quoted as saying.

Blogs and other technology Web sites had been speculating about the product since the patent was filed, with one blog even posting a sketch of what it may look like.

The company has previously combined aspects of its popular Walkman music technology with its cell phones.
