Review: Panasonic DMX-FX500
October 2008I jumped into manual mode and two slider bars appeared on screen letting me easily adjusting the settings, I found this useful, but for straight point and shoot or video I was very happy using Intelligent Auto mode. I can’t say enough good things about Intelligent Auto scene modes and I was able to do some artsy things by touching the screen for auto focusing in different areas. The face detection is capable of detecting 15 faces in a scene and I believe them, even though I only tested it with 9.
The Panasonic DMX-FX500 is a feature-loaded, sturdy camera that’s built for almost any occasion. The battery (Li-ion) is robust. The energy efficient Venus Engine IV imaging engine further improves the battery life. It’s rated for 280 pictures; I got 250 on a single charge. Any complaints I have are small; no view finder (which is quickly disappearing from the digicam landscape) and the small joystick took me a while to get used to. Am I quibbling? Yes, probably. Overall this is a really good camera and it has the ability to take HD 16x9 video. The FX500 is very small pocket-sized camera with a big 3-inch screen. It’s a product of excellent engineering with intuitive features that work well. For a few years now Panasonic has been doing good things with their digital cameras. They have been quietly stepping to the front of the class. Based on the FX-500 I’d have to say that it’s no accident.
