Oppo Digital Upconverting DVD Player
January 2006Video output on the OPDV971H is an odd mix to say the least. The good news is that the player's DVI output can deliver your DVD signal in 480p, 540p, 576p, 720p or 1080i resolution. I tested the machine on a Samsung DLP microdisplay which has a 720p native resolution, so I selected 720p for optimum performance. For owners of older non-HDCP DVI monitors, you'll be happy to learn that the OPDV971H does not support HDCP.
The analog component video output of the OPDV971H is interlaced only, not progressive. Watching a few of my favorite torture tests from Star Trek: Insurrection and Lethal Weapon 4, I pretty much preferred the crisp and artifact-free 720p DVI signal to that of the 480i component connection. As a matter of fact, the 720p image was among the cleanest I've seen, for DVD at least. That being said, there are probably better machines out there if you don't plan on taking advantage of this player's upscaling DVI capabilities.
Despite a few ergonomic issues, Oppo's first venture into the crowded DVD marketplace is a solid one. If you're using its DVI output, I think you'll find that the OPDV971H is a fantastic player for the money.
