DataColor SpyderTV
May 2006The Spyder works by taking measurements with the colorimeter, then telling you to make adjustments to the contrast, brightness, color and tint settings, based on the measurements. It's incredibly easy to use, and very precise. First you need to input into the computer the type, make and model of your TV (it works for CRT, LCD, plasma and microdisplay rear projection, but not front projectors). Then you enter the current values for the TV's settings and the minimum and maximum ranges for each category. Then, using the DVD, you display a series of test patterns while the colorimeter snaps readings and tells you how much to raise or lower each setting. The process takes 30 minutes to an hour to complete, and in the end you get a printable report on the results.
You can repeat the process for all your inputs so long as you can hook them up to a DVD player. I used the Spyder on three TVs (a CRT, plasma and LCD), and on each one it produced better results than what I was able to achieve with a standard test pattern disc and my eyeball guesses. The biggest problem with the SpyderTV is that once your friends see how good your TV looks, they'll want you to come over and fix all their TVs too. --Grant Clauser
